Three Types of Foods to Avoid When Your Gums Are Receding

Posted on 7/25/2016 by Dr. Dennison
A woman chewing onto a sugar cube.If your gums are receding as a result of gum disease, the roots and nerves will suddenly be exposed due to the retracting gum tissue.

While you get treatment for the problem, you'll want to avoid certain activities that can make your recession worse or can increase your discomfort. Avoiding certain types of foods could help to reduce your symptoms and future recession.

Baked Goods and Other Sweets
Most sugary foods are bad news for the teeth, including candy, cake, donuts, energy drinks, and chocolate. Sugar feeds the bacteria in your mouth, causing them to produce acid that can lead to decay. Eating these foods can also lead to gum disease, resulting in recession, so you should avoid them if you want to keep your gums healthy.

Citrus Fruits, Soda, and Other Acidic Foods

Bacteria thrive in an acidic oral environment, and they can contribute to gum disease, including receding gums. Highly acidic foods can also destroy the enamel of the teeth, so they can further damage teeth that have been over-exposed as a result of recession. For this reason, you should limit consuming foods with high acidity, which can also include pasta, white bread, pickled foods, black tea, and coffee.

Cold Foods and Drinks

During gum recession, the nerves supplying your teeth are exposed. This will make them more sensitive, especially to cold foods and drinks. To stay comfortable, you should avoid cold items like popsicles, ice cubes, and ice cream.

Fruits and veggies that are refrigerated may also cause pain and discomfort. Instead, drink or eat items that are at room temperature or are briefly heated in the microwave.

If you are suffering from sensitivity as a result of your receding gums, consider brushing your teeth with sensitivity toothpaste. Contact our office we can also recommend treatment options that can help with the problem.
