Most people know that gum disease can cause you to lose your teeth, suffer from gum recession, and even endure bone loss. But did you know that gum disease can contribute to other conditions as well? Gum disease can contribute to cardiovascular issues as well as lung cancer.

The Link Between Gum Disease And Lung Cancer

A recent study considered whether there may be a connection between gum disease and other illnesses. When researchers turned to the question of cancer, they made a startling discovery: when other variables such as diet and tobacco use are accounted for, there is a clear link between gum disease and an increased incidence of lung cancer. Specifically, those subjects of the study who had a history of gum disease had a 36 percent increased chance of developing lung cancer.

Take Care Of Your Health

You probably try to eat reasonably well and get enough exercise. What's more, you may try to limit harmful habits such as excessive alcohol use and tobacco use. While these are great steps towards improving your health, it is clear that fighting off gum disease is a significant part of maintaining your good health as you age.

In addition to the above healthy habits, for the sake of your body you should make sure to brush your teeth at least twice a day. Also, floss every day, as there is a clear link between the frequency with which you floss and your chances of fighting off gum disease.

Finally, come see us on a regular basis for a professional cleaning. We will clean your teeth down below the gum line where brushing and flossing don't reach.

We are here to help you keep your smile healthy and happy. Contact our office today!
