Dental Implant Preparation
Dr. Dennison begins with making a cut into the gum tissue. This is to expose the bone where the dental implant is to be placed. If he finds that there is insufficient bone, he is able to graft bone before continuing the procedure. With healthy bone established, Dr. Dennison uses a specialized drill to create the space in the bone to receive the dental implant.
Dental Implant Placement
He will remove the sutures approximately a week after placement. The healing and integration process can take between three and six months. During this time, the implant actually becomes both structurally and functionally part of the jawbone as it is fused to it through osseointegration.
Post And Crown Placement
Implants can be used to act as a base for overdentures and as a base for attaching dental bridges. Dr. Dennison can discuss these options with you and help you decide what is the best fit for your situation.
Implants And Smoking
Patients who smoke may not find dental implants to be the best option. The healing time for oral surgery in patients who smoke is considerably longer and may affect the overall strength of the implant. Dr. Dennison will have to review this situation before proceeding. Studies have found that the failure rate is higher in smokers.
Post-Implant Care
Caring for your new dental post is no different than caring for your natural teeth. We want to lessen the instance of infection, as we do when caring for your teeth and gums. Proper brushing and flossing to decrease bacteria will maximize the longevity of your new dental implant.
