3 Tips on Managing Your Sore Gums Until We Can See You

3 Tips on Managing Your Sore Gums Until We Can See YouIf gum disease progresses, you can have problems with gingival soreness. When you have both tenderness and soreness, it can be hard to swallow or chew. The following information will help you know how to cope with gum and mouth soreness until you until we can treat the issue.

What Causes Sore Gums?

Sore gums often result from gingivitis or periodontitis (advanced periodontal disease). However, soreness can also happen because of damaged restorations or hormonal changes. Therefore, to treat gum soreness, we must diagnose the underlying cause. We can more easily do this periodontally by measuring the pocket depths of the gums. When the depth is bigger, it tells us what we need to do to treat the gums to remove the resulting infection. Depending on the depth, we may have to perform a deep clean (scaling and root planing), and/or a more advanced procedure, such as gum flap surgery or grafting.

What 3 Steps Should Be Followed When Soreness Is an Issue?

Until you can visit our office about your gum soreness, you should, first, rinse your mouth with a warm saltwater rinse. Second, avoid eating foods that are hard, too hot, or too cold, to avoid further sensitivity and irritation. Eat soft foods, such as steamed vegetables, cheese, or eggs (soft-boiled or scrambled). Finally, when brushing, use a super soft toothbrush and brush gently. An antibacterial mouthwash can also ease soreness and pain. In addition, it helps to take measures to lessen the stress in your life, as stress can lead to tooth grinding or a lack of oral care.

Don't allow periodontal issues to persist. Call our team of periodontal professionals to take care of your oral health needs to enhance your overall health. Give us a call whenever you have any type of periodontal concern, or contact us online to schedule an appointment. Make sure you address a problem with bleeding or soreness as soon as possible.
