How a Scaling Appointment Typically Goes with Us

Posted on 5/10/2021 by Dr. Dennison
How a Scaling Appointment Typically Goes with UsIf you miss several appointments with us and practice poor oral hygiene, you will have a plaque build-up in your mouth. This may result in gum inflammation, also called gingivitis. Gingivitis is curable with early treatment. However, if untreated, this condition will worsen and cause periodontal disease, which is only treatable but not curable. If we diagnose periodontal disease, we will recommend periodontal scaling to prevent tooth loss.

What To Expect During Scaling

Chronic periodontal disease is characterized by gum recession and pockets, which host bacteria and plaque. If untreated, this condition will cause bone loss, loose teeth, and eventual loss of teeth. Scaling removes plaque and tartar build-up below your gum line. During your appointment, we will start by numbing your gums to prevent discomfort. We will then use a scaler to remove plaque below your gum line and at the base of your teeth. Afterward, we will rinse and sterilize the pockets, then proceed with root planning. We will use a root planning device to smoothen the root surface of your teeth. This way, your gums will easily reattach to the base and close the pockets, preventing food and bacteria trapping. To clear out the infection, we will apply an antibiotic ointment over your gums.

Scaling After Care

Immediately after scaling, you can resume normal activities. You will experience gum tenderness and tooth sensitivity after treatment, but this is manageable with over-the-counter medication. Also, you should adhere to the prescription we give you to the latter. If you have gum disease, we will schedule appointments after every four months to monitor the pockets and determine whether there is a need for additional treatment. We will also perform routine cleanings during these visits for good oral health. To further help in recovery and prevent gum disease's reoccurrence, you should continue practicing good oral hygiene and rinse your mouth with an antibacterial mouth wash. You should also eat healthy meals and avoid unhealthy substances like tobacco. For more details on scaling, contact our office today.
