How To Prevent Periodontitis

Posted on 11/8/2021 by Dr. Dennison
How To Prevent PeriodontitisPeriodontitis, also known as periodontal disease, is a severe gum infection from harmful bacteria in the mouth. It affects the gum tissue around the tooth, forming deep pockets. If not treated early, this dental condition can lead to tooth and bone loss. Studies from the CDC show that periodontitis is a common infection that affects over 47.2% of adults above 30 years.

An early sign of periodontitis includes inflamed and tender gums. This form of gum disease causes bleeding when brushing your teeth. Chewing and eating food becomes extremely painful. The most noticeable symptoms are bad breath and your teeth appearing longer due to the receding gums. At the advanced stage, the bone tissue that holds the tooth in place is no more.

Learn About the Prevention of Periodontitis

There are a few steps we encourage our patients to take to prevent periodontitis. One of them is to avoid smoking. Those who smoke tobacco are at a higher risk of developing a form of gum disease. It increases the amount of tartar on the teeth' surface.

During regular visits, we carefully examine the gums for any signs of periodontitis. An X-ray is also done to check if there is any bone loss. This way, we can treat or prevent any early signs and symptoms before they become serious. Getting frequent dental cleanings from our team will remove plaque before it hardens.

At our clinic, we also advise our patients to practice proper dental hygiene. Brushing twice a day or after each meal makes sure, gets rid of bacteria from the teeth. Removing tiny food particles by flossing also reduces the risk of periodontitis. We recommend changing toothbrushes every three months since bacteria sticks to old bristles.

We offer treatment for periodontitis for healthy teeth and gums. If you have any questions about periodontitis, please reach out to us for a consultative appointment.
