Gum disease is a serious condition that, left untreated, can have some detrimental effects on your oral health, as well as the health of your whole body. Red, inflamed gums begin to recede, your teeth and jawbone become infected, bacteria invade your blood stream, you may lose teeth.
Treatment puts a stop to these dire consequences. But treatment doesn’t stop at the dentist’s office. There are several home remedies that you can use at home during your gum disease treatment to help your gums heal and keep your mouth healthy.
Oil Pulling
Oil pulling is an Ayuvedic technique that has been used for years to promote oral health. Not only does it aid red, swollen gums, it helps to strengthen both gums and teeth. As the name suggests, oil, is used to pull toxins from your mouth and reduces plaque buildup on teeth. Coconut oil provides the best results, but you can also use sesame or olive. Simply swish the oil in your mouth for approximately fifteen minutes, spit and rinse again with water.
Garlic And Turmeric
Garlic may make your breath unpleasant, but it has some excellent antibacterial properties, helping to kill bacteria. Turmeric, a root often used in Indian cuisine, also has antibacterial properties and is also a great anti-inflammatory, which can reduce the swelling of your gums. Make a paste with fresh ingredients (which ensure the compounds are at their strongest) and rub it on your teeth and gums. Allow the paste to sit for several minutes before rinsing it out with water.
