Recovering From A Gum Graft

What Does Bone Graft Have To Do With Dental Implants TreatmentIf your gums have severely receded, you may require a gum graft. A gum graft is a procedure in which tissue is grafted onto your gums to prevent further recession, which can lead to severe sensitivity, bone damage and tooth loss.

If you have undergone a gum graft, there are a few things you should know about the recovery process.

Pain And Swelling

As with most surgical procedures, some pain and swelling is to be expected. Most pain can be managed with over the counter pain relievers, but you should avoid blood-thinners, as they can cause bleeding. In some instances, you may be prescribed stronger pain relievers. Antibiotics may also be prescribed, and they should be taken as directed. Ice can help alleviate swelling.

To keep both to a minimum, you should limit physical activity while you heal. During the first twenty-four hours, you should keep from moving around much. Keep your head elevated. Don’t bend over or lift heavy objects. After the first day or two, you can resume light activity. Stay away from intense exercise until you are fully healed.

Diet

Stick to a soft food diet. You may even want to consider liquids for the first twenty-four hours. But don’t drink through a straw. Avoid hard, crunchy foods and foods that are sticky. You should also stay away from acidic foods as well as foods that are extremely hot. What you do chew, avoid chewing near the surgical site.

Oral Hygiene

Oral hygiene is critical to proper healing. You should continue to brush and floss, but avoid the area of the surgical site until you are fully healed. A prescription mouthwash can help kill bacteria at the site.

When To Call Your Dentist

As long as you follow your dentist’s instructions, healing should go smoothly. If you experience pain that can’t be controlled, even by prescription pain medication, or persistent bleeding, contact your dentist immediately.

Healing from a gum graft typically takes about one week, and then you can get back to your normal life. As long as you practice proper oral hygiene and visit your dentist regularly, you can keep your gums healthy and prevent the need for a repeat procedure.
