The Immediate Care Needed For Dental Implants

After you get dental implants, life can be very exciting! You have new teeth that promise to enhance your smile and give you the ability to eat whatever you want. While it is an exciting time, it is also important to ensure that you take care of them during the first few weeks of receiving them. You will realize the full benefits not long after you recover, but how you treat your mouth during that initial period will determine the outcome.

The First 24 Hours

During the first 24 hours following your implant surgery, it is important to rest. Do not plan any heavy activities or plan to make any big decisions. Instead, relax as much as possible and stick to a liquid diet. In fact, you should not eat or drink anything until the anesthesia wears off, but once it does, a liquid diet will be the most comfortable for you.

The Next Few Days

Once the first 24 hours are over, you can resume your normal activity as you see fit, depending on how you feel. You will likely have to manage pain and swelling, however, which means applying ice packs as frequently as every ten minutes to the area and using over-the-counter ibuprofen to control the pain and swelling. If the pain is unbearable, a call to our office will help you come up with other solutions.

The Rest Of Your Life

Make sure to keep the areas where the implants were placed extremely clean. This is, of course, no different than the hygiene necessary for the rest of your mouth, but as the implant area heals, it is more susceptible to infection, which you want to avoid. Make sure to properly brush, floss, and rinse your mouth as often as possible in order to keep it clean.
